  • Why do people place their hope in things or people other than Jesus?

Sermon Recap

Jesus continues his conversation regarding "the end" in Mark 13:14-23. There is a clear warning of a difficult tribulation prefaced by a power that will bring desolation to God's temple. During this time period, there will be a plethora of false christ's and prophets attempting to lure people into hope outside of Jesus; any hope but Jesus leads to our demise. So, Jesus instructs us to "pay attention" so that we won't be become swayed.

Community Discussion

  • New Testament Judaism ultimately traded the glory of God for the glory of the temple system by placing their hopes in the temple system instead of Jesus. In what ways are we placing our hopes in social, political, educational, economic and even religious systems? How are these hopes being expressed in our faithfulness to Jesus and His mission?
  • Jesus gives us warnings because He is gracious. He encourages us to Be on Guard against false hopes. How are we doing with warning each other about the hopes we are placing in people or things instead of Jesus? What are some ways we can encourage each other to place our hopes in Jesus and not lesser things? How are we accountable to each other in regards to where we are are placing our hopes?
  • Speaking with an attitude of gratitude can combat the lies of false hopes as we direct our thanksgiving to God and not ourselves. How thankful are we as a community for the goodness of God? How are we actively expressing our gratitude towards God and each other?
