Humility

Getting Started

  • How would you explain pride? How would you explain humility?

Sermon Recap

In our sermon series on Mark "Man of Prediction, God of Presence" Pastor Kurt talked about humility, from Mark 9:30-50. He kicked off the sermon talking about Jesus' second of three predictions He made of His death, burial, and resurrection. We learned that who Jesus was, and what He came to accomplish is more important than his ethical teachings. The text tells three stories of humility when viewed through a proper understanding of the gospel. To understand Jesus, we must have a good understanding of His person and work. The death, burial and resurrection promise gives us a proper sense of humility. We learned that pride is an exaggeration of self-importance and self-pity. Also that a proper understanding of the gospel gives us a proper understanding of humility. Following this prediction of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection we read three stories of how misunderstanding the resurrection of Jesus will cause us to act pridefully instead of humbly.

Mark 9:33-37

Lesson #1: Position

Our misunderstanding of the Resurrection causes us to misunderstand our position.

  • Humility leads us to serve others. Jesus compares greatness to the hard work of serving thankless children.

Mark 9:38-39

Lesson #2: Partnerships

Our misunderstanding of the resurrection causes us to misunderstand partners.

  • Humility leads us to bless others. We must build bridges with people who aren't changing who Jesus is but are following Him differently than we do, instead of burning them down. If they aren't changing who Jesus is, then we are on the same team.

Lesson #3: Personal Holiness

Our misunderstanding of the resurrection causes us to misunderstand our personal holiness.

  • Humility leads us to personal holiness.
    • We need to fight for holiness with our work. (what we do with our hands)
    • We need to fight for holiness with where we go. (where our feet take us)
    • We need to fight for holiness with the vision we have for our life. (What are eyes see) Does the vision for our life include blessing others?

We get self-preoccupied and can't understand the death, burial and resurrection and its eternal effects on our lives. We must have a good understanding of the gospel, to have a good understanding of ourselves. The death, burial, and resurrection give us a proper sense of our self, and the power to live a life of humility.

Community Discussion

  • In what ways has pride hindered our connection and mission in community life? How has humility impacted our connection and mission in community life?
  • How have we interacted with other disciples and other congregations that are different than us?
  • In what ways are we fighting for personal holiness? How have you fought for holiness in your work, with where you are going, and with the vision of your life? In what ways do we need to begin fighting for personal holiness?
