Getting Started

  • Describe a time when you had high expectations for something and those expectations were either exceeded, or you were let down.
  • Describe a time were miscommunicated or misunderstood expectations caused frustration for you.

Community Discussion

  • We all come to Jesus with expectations. Typically, these expectations are based on perception, privilege, and/or preservation. Those expectations often determine our understanding of Jesus. In what ways do we allow our expectations of Jesus to determine what we believe about him, and who we are in relationship to Him instead of allowing the scriptures to be our authority in these matters?
  • In what ways do we let the Bible determine how we view our emotions, expectations, and experiences? In what ways do we let our emotions, expectations, and experiences determine how we view the Bible?
  • How do the expectations we have for life in Community affect the way we interact with each other? How are we encouraging each other in our study of the Bible as a community? How do these expectations affect the way we are doing mission as a community?

Further Discussion

Discipleship

  • We all come to Jesus with expectations. Typically, these expectations are based on perception, privilege, and/or preservation. Those expectations often time dictate our understanding of Jesus. In what ways do you allow your expectations of Jesus to determine what you believe about him, and who you are in relationship to Him instead of allowing the scriptures to be your authority in these matters?
  • We learned that the expectations the Pharisees approached Jesus with were based on their own preservation and keeping their position and power. What areas of your life are you holding back out of fear that giving it to Jesus would cost you something that you highly value?
  • Describe an instance where approaching Jesus with unbiblical expectations has left you frustrated, and discouraged when those expectations go unmet. How could these feelings have been different, if your expectations were a result of rightly studying the Scriptures?

Family

  • How have miscommunicated, or non-communicated expectations affected the relationships within your family?
  • In what ways have expectations your family has placed on Jesus been based on things other than the scriptures? What kinds of misunderstanding of Jesus has this created within your family?
  • Since the scriptures authoritatively reveal Jesus, and our expectations of Jesus should be based on scripture and not our own perceptions How does your family study the scriptures together? What is one way you could begin studying the scriptures as a family?
