Who's in Control? July 16, 2017

Getting Started

  • Why do you think there are so many areas of control issues in our society?
  • Where do we see control issues playing out in our everyday life?

Community Discussion

  • The Council was speaking the loudest in an attempt to control Jesus. This had the crowd in an uproar supporting the Council's position regarding Jesus. In what ways do we allow the loudest voices in our society to shape and mold our understanding of Jesus? In what ways are you listening to people whose end goal isn't to make God's story of redemption known?
  • Living in America we know that there are a decent amount of Christians living around us. We connect often with many of them at Missio. In our text we learned that Pilate was seeking control through passivity. How are we being overly passive with sharing Jesus to the unbelieving people around us? How are we neglecting the responsibility we have to share the gospel and shifting the blame onto others for not accomplishing the work Jesus is calling us to do?
  • We were encouraged be patient when making decisions, be honest when making decisions, and listen for God in submission in faithful response to the Gospel. Which of these three practical applications do we find most difficult? How can we as a community encourage one another to actively rest in the reality that God is in control of all things?

Family

  • To some measure we all have some types of control issues that surface in different areas of our life. In your family, how have you seen your control issues played out in the way that you relate to your spouse, or parent your children? How have you seen the control issues your children experience played out inside or outside your home?
